The LEGO Batman Movie Egmont Books Range Review

There have been many LEGO books released over the last few years, but never have there been so many based on a single theme, released at the same time. Egmont have been publishing LEGO titles for a while now but they have recently signed a deal with Warner Bros. to produce a number of books based on the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes line. This includes four new titles based on The LEGO Batman Movie. Just before Christmas we revealed one of those titles would include an exclusive LEGO Batman minifigure and a few weeks ago we took a closer look at that minifigure. Now thanks to Egmont UK we have their entire range to take a look at. So let’s see how the shape up.

Review

This is by far one of the most high profile titles from Egmont’s The LEGO Batman Movie range thanks to the inclusion of the exclusive Tartan Batman minifigure. It’s only available with this book so it’s certainly a big draw for older LEGO fans and collectors. But first and foremost it’s a book, which is filled with fun activities, stories and comic strips. All of which are illustrated with some great hand-drawn artwork. The humour of the movie has been nicely captured, in not only the stories but also the activities. Which include Spot the Difference, mazes and various different image matching puzzles. It’s a fun book, although aimed at kids, I really like the hand-drawn artwork and of course the Tartan Batman minifigure is a welcomed addition and something most people will be picking it up for.

The smallest title in the range is styled as a journal-type book, complete with notes from Batman and his doodles. There’s pages of Batman’s inner thoughts and his genius ideas. There’s also plenty of sections where the reader can add their own doodles and ideas. One of my favourite parts of the book is Batman’s one page rant about how only he can see that Superman and Clark Kent are the same person, with his glasses being a stupid disguise. He has a point! The doodle-type illustrations are a great addition and help sell the journal angle of the book. As an added bonus there’s also a few stickers you can use in the book or else where.

Even Super Heroes likes to doodle, so this Doodle Activity Book is just the job for budding heroes. The hand-drawn artwork seems to be a running theme with Egmont’s titles and it’s a welcomed change to stock images of LEGO sets. But even though images are all illustrated, they still offer a unique look at rumoured upcoming LEGO sets, such as the Batwing pictured below. The book is filled with things to do from colouring in, to completing pictures and adding your own doodles. It will certainly keep younger readers busy for a fair few hours and offers a fun look at The LEGO Batman Movie characters.

Finally we have a good old sticker book, which contains over 200 reusable. Along with those stickers the book features a few pages which act as backdrops for the stickers, from completing images which certain pieces of stickers to creating your own scene with others. Everything is presented in the same illustrated style as seen in the other books. Kids just love stickers and there’s plenty here to keep them occupied for a while, better still they are reusable, useful for if the stickers happen to make their way beyond the book.

Overall

We’ve had the pleasure of checking out a number of different LEGO-themed books from various publishers. Egmont’s offerings use of hand-drawn illustrations give them a unique presentation over other books. The puzzles, stickers and other activities are fun and in keeping with the movie’s wacky sense of humour. There is a little bit of similarity across the titles but they each offer something different in their own way. Of course our favourite title is the Chaos in Gotham Activity Book thanks to the fun Tartan Batman minifigure. We’ll like to thank the press team at Egmont for kindly sending us these titles to review and we look forward to seeing what they have to offer next.
